Workshop: What is AIS?
As part of the Deaf Active project, Deirdre led a welcoming and insightful workshop titled ‘What is AIS?’ The session aimed to raise awareness about the NHS Accessible Information Standard (AIS), inspired by the See Hear report, which highlights the importance of clear communication for Deaf BSL users.
Deirdre began by explaining how to access emergency services like 999 using British Sign Language (BSL) or SMS and outlined how NHS111 can provide support through web chat or BSL video services. She encouraged attendees to reflect on their experiences with medical communication, particularly frustrations with unclear medical letters and the lack of easy ways to seek clarification.
The discussion also touched on challenges faced during medical appointments, including the absence of interpreters, difficulty understanding doctors, and noisy consultation rooms. Deirdre reassured attendees that the AIS, supported by the Equality Act 2010, protects their rights to accessible healthcare. The Standard ensures medical information is provided in formats and languages that meet individual needs, including support for Deaf parents and Deaf carers.
Deirdre stressed that everyone has the right to an inclusive healthcare system and shared resources for raising concerns with organisations like HealthWatch, ICB, NHS England, and CQC. Attendees left empowered with practical tools and knowledge to advocate for their rights.
