100 Year Heritage of Walsall Deaf Community

Using money raised by National Lottery players, The National Lottery Heritage Fund supports projects that connect people and communities with the UK’s heritage. The 100 Year Heritage of Walsall Deaf Community project is made possible with The National Lottery Heritage Fund. Thanks to National Lottery players, Zebra Access proudly announces the commencement of our groundbreaking project! This two-year initiative embarks on a journey through time, capturing the essence of the Walsall Deaf community's evolution from 1919 to 2019.

Our project involves extensive research, inclusive studies, and engaging one-to-one and group interviews within the local Deaf, Hard of Hearing, Deafblind and Deafened people and their friends and family. By delving deep into historical archives and personal narratives, we aim to create a fully accessible and digitised portrayal of the Walsall Deaf community's heritage. The ultimate culmination of our efforts will be an enlightening digital film, complete with subtitles and in-vision British Sign Language (BSL) interpretation, ensuring accessibility for all members of the community.

The heritage of the Walsall Deaf community is not merely a collection of facts and figures; it is a testament to resilience, triumph, and cultural identity. By preserving this heritage, we honour the contributions and experiences of past generations while inspiring and empowering future ones. Our project serves as a beacon of inclusivity, highlighting the importance of accessibility and representation in historical narratives.

We invite you to join us on this transformative journey. Whether you are Deaf, Hard of Hearing, Deafblind and Deafened people and their friends and family, there are countless ways to get involved. Share your stories, contribute to our research, or lend your support to our cause. Together, we can ensure that the legacy of the Walsall Deaf community thrives for generations to come.

About The National Lottery Heritage Fund:

The National Lottery Heritage Fund is the largest funder for the UK’s heritage. Using money raised by National Lottery players we support projects that connect people and communities to heritage. Our vision is for heritage to be valued, cared for and sustained for everyone, now and in the future. From historic buildings, our industrial legacy and the natural environment, to collections, traditions, stories and more. Heritage can be anything from the past that people value and want to pass on to future generations. We believe in the power of heritage to ignite the imagination, offer joy and inspiration, and to build pride in place and connection to the past.
