A day at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens

After the last walk to Sandwell Valley, we visited the Botanical Gardens in Birmingham. There were 12 of us who attended in total and we met up at the tearoom for a cuppa and cake first along with a catch-up before taking a couple of hours’ walk around the gardens.

The weather wasn’t too bad a bit dull and rained slightly but it didn’t put us off. It was good to see lots of unusual plants mostly never seen before. Lovely to see snowdrops and crocus popping up through the grasses. We went into the Tropical House which was so hot and humid there with varied plants, tree climbers, water plants so on.

We went into the Mediterranean House – a glasshouse that wealthy families used which was so popular back in the Victorian days. Also went into The Arid House which is used to keep plants suitable for dry places like cliffs desserts or under tree branches. There was even a full tree of beautiful roses in the garden which was in full bloom in February(!)

A lot of us took photos of plants and ourselves! In the end, we returned to the tearoom for a hearty warming lunch of soup, cheese toasties and even naughty cake! It was an enjoyable day all around and I definitely would return in the summer when the flowers are in full bloom!

This would have not been possible without the funding from Comic Relief
