Sign Smarter AI
We’ve got some exciting news to share!
Zebra Access has secured an additional £19,200 from The National Lottery Community Fund’s Reaching Communities programme for a new 12-month project: Sign Smarter: Deaf-led AI for Accessible Information, Evidence and Impact.
Over the next year, we’ll explore whether and how AI can be used safely, responsibly and appropriately within our organisation.
The project will include staff and trustee training, testing suitable tools, developing clear AI guidance and policy, and exploring how AI might support parts of our accessibility workflow, such as preparing plain English content and supporting the process of creating Deaf-led BSL video summaries. The BSL videos themselves will remain human-led and delivered by Deaf people.
We also recognise the concerns surrounding AI, including environmental impact, data protection, accuracy, bias and ethical use. Understanding these risks and setting clear boundaries around when AI should, and should not, be used will be an important part of the project.
A big thank you to The National Lottery Community Fund and National Lottery players for supporting this work.
